How often should you get a haircut?

Guests ask us this at checkout all the time. The answer depends on how long your hair is, how precise the shape is, and whether you color.

The short answer

Most of our guests come back every 6 to 8 weeks. Short cuts need it sooner. If you're growing your hair out, you can usually wait longer, as long as the ends are holding up.

By hair length and style

HairTypical timingWhy
Short cuts, pixies, bobsAbout every 4 to 6 weeksHalf an inch of growth changes the shape
Medium length, layersAbout every 6 to 8 weeksLayers and face framing start to drop
Long hairAbout every 8 to 12 weeksA small trim takes off split ends
Men's cutsAbout every 3 to 6 weeksThe neckline and sides grow out first

Signs you're due

  • Your style takes longer to get right in the morning.
  • The ends feel dry, tangle easily or look see-through.
  • Layers or bangs have lost their shape.
  • Your part or neckline looks fuzzy.

If you also color your hair

A lot of guests book their cut with their color so it's one visit instead of two. Ask your stylist how often your color needs a refresh and line the two up.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How often should I get a trim if I'm growing my hair out?

About every 8 to 12 weeks is typical. A small trim takes off split ends before they split further up, so you don't lose more length later.

How often should men get a haircut?

Most short men's styles look best with a cut about every 3 to 6 weeks. At LuLu, men's cut and style starts at $41 and includes a head massage.

Does a haircut make hair grow faster?

No. Hair grows from the scalp. Trims just keep the ends from thinning out and breaking, so the length you grow actually stays.
