Choose balayage if you want soft, natural, lived-in brightness that grows out gracefully, with more time between visits. Choose foil highlights if you want more lift and a brighter, more even blonde, and you don't mind refreshing more often.
How each technique works
Balayage
Your stylist paints lightener freehand onto the surface of sections, heaviest toward the ends and softest near the root. There's no hard line to grow out, which is why balayage is the go-to for low-maintenance color.
Foil highlights
Fine or chunky sections are woven or sliced, painted, and wrapped in foil. Foil traps heat and moisture, so lightener works harder and lifts more. The result is brighter, more uniform dimension from root to end.
